Protect Your Home — With A Home Owners Insurance

Article by Barry Ballard

Joplin, Missouri suffers direct hit from tornado, claiming at least 24 lives. The scale of the damage appeared to be the worst in this southwest Missouri city. The big question now is: how are the people of Joplin coping up with the situation? Of course it’s not easy. It will never be easy. When a tornado flattens your house and you’re quite surprised that you’re still alive, it’s a sign that there’s still a chance to fix a mistake. What mistake? For not putting your property under home owners insurance. Home owners insurance covers almost all personal insurance protection, from loss of personal possession of homeowners, liability insurance for accidents and content loss. Tornado, hurricanes, flash floods and earthquakes are just some of nature’s way to remind us how fragile we humans are. If you chose to live in the west coast, there’s the San Andreas fault to deal with. The east coast, on the other hand, is a hurricane-prone area. The most catastrophic hurricanes that can form on planet Earth is right there at the Atlantic (remember Hurricane Isabel)? If you’re in the Midwest, a massive tornado like the one in Joplin will surely cause damage to your properties. So regardless where you are in the United States, there’s always something destructive to deal with. Your only protection now is to put your properties under home owners insurance. Make sure to list all the open and named perils you want to cover, because most home owners insurance policies do not include claims due to floods, war and termites infestation. One company that you can try, especially if you are living in a coastal area is Better Property Insurance. This company specializes in providing property insurance for coastal homes. Just like what I mentioned earlier, if you have a house near the beach, you will be dealing with lots of wind and water damages in the event of a hurricane. There’s no way to protect your home against physical damages; it’s hard to start all over again especially when your property is not insured. With home owners insurance, at least Better Property Insurance will pay for the [specific] damages. To learn more about property insurance, or home owners insurance in particular, you can check out Better Property Insurance. Aside from coastal homes, they also cover some areas in the Midwest and west coast. You can get a free quote from their website so you can compare rates with other insurance providers. You can set an appointment with one of their agents to orient or educate you more about the importance of home owners insurance. Of course you might say that it’s just all about “sales” and they will just try to talk you out, convince you to sign a policy and ask to pay the premium but that’s not really the case, considering the chance you can spare yourself from dealing with the “aftermath”. Home owners insurance is all you need to make sure you can start all over again. Without it, you will be back to square one and it will never be easy the second time around unless you’ll be more careful and will consider all available options to protect your home.

Home Gamers Cause Television Havoc

Article by RACV Insurance

RACV Insurance carried out an analysis of accidental damage claims by its members which showed that, in the past four years, more than 50 per cent of such claims related to electronic items such as computers, televisions, mobile phones and cameras.

RACV home insurance General Manager Paul Northey said the growing presence of large flat screen televisions and portable computers in homes resulted in the increasing number of accidental damage claims.

This trend, coupled with the growth in the uptake of interactive gaming at home, has created a high-risk environment, especially for television sets.”Damage to screens made up 84 per cent of all accidental television and computer claims last financial year”.

“Some are the result of the damage caused when TVs or computers are being moved around the home or being knocked down. However, the increase in the use of interactive gaming at home has literally put televisions in harm’s way.”

Mr Northey said that an analysis of member’s claims for the past four years had shown a concerning upward trend in gamers, predominately children, losing control of their hand-held device which would then hit the screen.

“In the heat of the game players may lose control of their hand-held device and send it flying into the screen, which could leave them without a TV set, while it is repaired or replaced.

Continued….

“People do need to take care to avoid damaging their television, or other valuables and furnishings in the room, when they are involved in interactive gaming” he said.

Mr Northey suggests a few simple safety tips:

- make sure all of the electrical cords and cables are secured and removed from the front of the television and the game-playing area

- secure the television on a stable surface and where possible attach it to the wall or bench with the approved fittings

- acknowledge the risk when you or your children are playing interactive games and take the appropriate steps, including child supervision, to prevent damage to your television

- take care when moving your television or computer, or when cleaning them

“If you have active gamers in your home it is worthwhile reviewing your insurance policy to ensure you have the appropriate accidental damage option with your home and contents insurance,” he said.

Five top items replaced*.1) Televisions – 33%2) Computers including laptops – 26%3) Mobile phones and personal communication items – 7%4) Jewellery including watches and rings – 4%5) Photographic equipment and accessories – 3%6) Other: collectables, furniture, homewares, cycles etc – 27%

Why You Should Compare Contents Insurance and Not Just Home Insurance

Article by Dub Johnston

Do you need to compare contents insurancde? You may have just purchased a house or are renting and need to cover your items in case of burglary, fire, theft or other mishaps which may occur in a household. Many of these loses can occur at anytime, especially theft and fire. A fire could totally destroy your house and if you are uninsured then you could lose everything.

So how do you go out getting contents insurance?

Here are a few tips to help you get the best contents insurance.

Contents Vs Home Insurance: It is important that you understand the difference between building or home insurance and contents insurance. Home or building insurance is for damage or loss to the building. This can include walls, room, floor, carpet, stumps and garages. The contents however are things such as a TV, couch, stereo system, fridge, jewellery and clothes. Most banks will require you to get building insurance, so if you have a mortgage then you are likely to have building insurance. So just double check with your insurance company or broker, if you haven’t got contents insurance then you should get a quote and sum up whether you think the price is worth the risk.

Home Security: Maximise the security of your home or premises. The most common claims for contents insurance is due to theft, so your first aim is to stop the robber from breaking in and entering your home. The cheapest way to do this is get locks for your gate, windows and doors. The gate is a main entry point and so by making it hard for potential robbers to actually enter your property.

A strong fence and gate does this nicely. In many countries residents use broken glass and some use a guard dog. Whether you install locks or get a Rottweiler, make sure you tell your content insurance provider of all the things you are doing to help prevent a robbery. They consider this in high regard when they price up your policy.

Contents Security: If your contents are secured properly then you will be able to get a better price on your contents insurance. When a robber enters your home, he usually goes for smallest and most expensive items. These include jewellery, small electronics and cash. By locking up your items you can help reduce the probability of loss, and that’s what insurance is all about. You can get an electronic and fire proof safes for under 0 and the discount you get on your insurance may make the safe a smart investment – it might save you more money that it costs.

So next time you need to compare contents insurance – use the above tips to help you get the best quote which has a good policy and a great price.
